Starters, Gifted & Talented and Mentor ButterfliesTraining School

Welcome to Finham Park Training School.

Finham Park continues to build on our work as a national Training School (2004-2010).

We work with several local universities to provide placements for around 30 trainee teachers each year. This usually takes place in two sections, firstly a short placement in the Autumn term and the longer second placement which stretches across the Spring and Summer terms.

We are a lead school for the School Direct teacher training route and work with the University of Warwick and schools in the West of Coventry to recruit new teachers into the profession.

A particular strength of the school is the research based CPD programme. All teachers are involved in TaLK groups focusing on sharing next and best practice. In 2013 we hosted Teachmeet Cov with people coming from across the region to discuss Teaching and Learning. We are also engaged with parTnership pLus, a group of about forty schools across Coventry and Warwickshire who share CPD opportunities including 'lesson observations for real' led by Ofsted inspectors. This continual process of reflection on classroom practice allows us to be sure that students receive high quality teaching that enables high quality learning to take place.

During 2012-13 we were able to offer placements for a range of training purposes these included;

  • Student Associate Scheme (SAS)
  • Pre Post Graduate Certificate of Education (experience practice)
  • Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE)
  • Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP)
  • NPQH
  • All requests for placements are coordinated through the Training School office and not directly with subject staff. This allows us to provide a specific training programme for your needs.

    Please contact Nicola Baker for information.

    We work in partnership with a number of ITT providers including the University of Warwick, University of Coventry, University of Birmingham, and Loughborough University. All of our mentors receive regular training and work closely with Training School staff and ITT providers.

    Those wishing to undertake placements with us will be required bring photo ID and documentation with confirmation of address For those who are interested in an initial experience in teaching, we would encourage you to explore the website first.

    Finham Park takes an active role in parTnership pLus. This is a group of nearly 40 schools across Coventry and Warwickhire who come together to focus on Teaching and Learning. A CPD programme is offered in schools across the partnership throughout the year. Highlights include 'lesson observations for real' and the Teaching and Learning Conference at the University of Warwick.

    Lesson observations for real allow up to about a hundred staff to watch a live lesson and then be involved in feedback discussions. Feedback is often led by a HMI inspector or academic specialist.

    We work alongside the local authority to provide support for NQTs and RQTs. Sessions include:

    • E-safety
    • Working with challenging pupils
    • Out of classroom learning
    • Steps into Middle Leadership

    We are part of two Teaching School Alliances, Swan Alliance (Frederick Bird School, Coventry) and Griffin Alliance (Lawrence Sheriff School, Rugby). These schools are both centres of excellence for teaching and learning and offer high quality support and CPD to schools in the region. We work with Griffin Alliance (Leadership Live) to deliver the National Professional Qualifications for Leadership. We also co-facilitate the Improving Teacher Programme (ITP) and Outstanding Teacher Programme (OTP) with the Swan Alliance.

    Classroom and Observatory

    Within the Training School we have a large classroom with interactive whiteboard and ICT provision. This is accessible for all trainee teachers and teaching staff to use. The classroom also has an observatory which allows for the room to be observed without disruption. We also have the facility to film and record lessons that take place in the classroom.

    This has proved a very valuable tool for teacher training. We have used the facilities in a number of ways. These include;

    • Observation by groups of trainees of particular classroom based activities eg. Q&A or group work
    • Observation of mentors by trainees
    • Observation of trainees by mentors to evidence standards
    • Coaching by peers
    • Filming lessons to share ideas and good practice with other staff
    • Monitoring impact of classroom based research
    • Producing materials for CPD focused on classroom activity

    Parental permission is gained each year and the recordings are used only for Training purposes.

    We would like to invite other school to use the Training facilities and we have worked successfully with the University of Warwick, Westwood School and Kingshurst CTC in the past.
