Welcome to Finham Park Training School.
Finham Park achieved Training School status in 2004 and has now developed into a highly regarded Teaching School within the Swan Alliance. We offer high quality training not only to all staff within the school, but colleagues also across the city with a variety of opportunities and courses.
As part of our role as a Teaching School we work with several local universities to provide placements for their trainee teachers. We cater for PGCE trainees and School Direct trainees; both routes complement each other and the trainees gain from this experience. We are a School Direct Alliance hub for a number of local schools and therefore we organise placements across the city. The school benefits tremendously from our work with trainees. Firstly, as a staff we are continuously developing the teaching and learning in the classrooms and secondly there are opportunities to access new staff into the profession when we have teacher vacancies.
A particular strength of the school is the comprehensive CPD programme. Finham Park believes in utilising its existing expertise from colleagues, and thus all staff are encouraged to offer CPD to the rest of the school. Therefore, weekly sessions of CPD are offered and staff sign up for their areas of interest. We have a broad induction programme for all new staff and trainees. Finham Park has also been instrumental in creating Teaching and Learning Communities as part of our CPD programme. This follows the ideas and research of Dylan Wiliams. Our TaLK groups meet once per half term and allow staff to undertake small research projects on a variety of issues which are linked to the school development plan and promote our main issue: teaching and learning. This has sustained a culture of curiosity and development in the classroom of which, we at Finham, are immensely proud.
During 2015-16 we were able to offer placements for a range of training purposes these included;
All requests for placements are coordinated through the Training School office and not directly with subject staff. This allows us to provide a specific training programme for your needs.
Please contact Nicola Baker for information.
We work in partnership with a number of ITT providers including the University of Warwick, University of Coventry and University of Birmingham. All of our mentors receive regular training and work closely with Training School staff and ITT providers.
Those wishing to undertake placements with us will be required bring photo ID and documentation with confirmation of address For those who are interested in an initial experience in teaching, we would encourage you to explore the website first.
Finham Park takes an active role in parTnership pLus. This is a group of nearly 40 schools across Coventry and Warwickhire who come together to focus on Teaching and Learning. A CPD programme is offered in schools across the partnership throughout the year. Highlights include 'lesson observations for real' and the Teaching and Learning Conference at the University of Warwick.
Lesson observations for real allow up to about a hundred staff to watch a live lesson and then be involved in feedback discussions. Feedback is often led by a HMI inspector or academic specialist.
We work alongside the local authority to provide support for NQTs and RQTs. Sessions include:
We are part of two Teaching School Alliances, Swan Alliance (Frederick Bird School, Coventry) and Griffin Alliance (Lawrence Sheriff School, Rugby). These schools are both centres of excellence for teaching and learning and offer high quality support and CPD to schools in the region. We work with Griffin Alliance (Leadership Live) to deliver the National Professional Qualifications for Leadership. We also co-facilitate the Improving Teacher Programme (ITP) and Outstanding Teacher Programme (OTP) with the Swan Alliance.
Within the Training School we have a large classroom with interactive whiteboard and ICT provision. This is accessible for all trainee teachers and teaching staff to use. The classroom also has an observatory which allows for the room to be observed without disruption. We also have the facility to film and record lessons that take place in the classroom.
This has proved a very valuable tool for teacher training. We have used the facilities in a number of ways. These include;
Parental permission is gained each year and the recordings are used only for Training purposes.
We would like to invite other school to use the Training facilities and we have worked successfully with the University of Warwick, Westwood School and Kingshurst CTC in the past.
