Drama and Theatre Studies

Entry Requirements


GCSE 5A*-C including a B grade or higher in English and Drama at GCSE.

Assessment

Exam Board: EdExcel

How many exams do I have to take?
None! There are no written exams at AS. Your only exam is a performance in front of an examiner.

Is there any coursework or controlled assessments?
Yes, you will write a Documentary Response about two plays studied and a Theatre Review of a piece of live Theatre.

 


Film Studies

Entry Requirements


5A*-C including a grade B in English, as well as proven creativity and imagination.

Exam Board: WJEC

How many exams do I have to take?
One exam at the end of Year 12 – 2.5 hours (FM2 – British and American Film), involving the analysis of the film industry (Section A), the way the UK is represented through film (Section B), and comparing two Hollywood films to each other to account for similarities and differences. An additional exam will be taken at the end of Year 13.

Is there any coursework or controlled assessments?
Yes, worth 40% of the course: You have to analyse a sequence from a film of your choice, and then plan, film, edit and evaluate a sequence of your own film.

 


Media Studies

Entry Requirements


GCSE 5A*-C and a grade B in English, as well as proven creativity and problem-solving skills.

Exam Board: AQA

How many exams do I have to take?
One exam at the end of Year 12 lasting 2 hours:
• Investigating Media, involving the analysis of one unseen text (Section A), and the use of individual case studies to explore the relationship between media platforms (Section B)
You will take additional exams at the end of Year 13.

Is there any coursework or controlled assessments?
Yes, worth 50% of the course: You have to research, prepare, produce and evaluate two media texts across different media platforms (Broadcast, Print, E-media), working to an industry brief.

 


Music

Entry Requirements


GCSE 5A*-C including a B grade or above in GCSE Music OR an Instrumental Grade 5 with Theory Grade 5.

Assessment

How many exams do I have to take?
One exam at the end of Year 12:
• 2 hours (Unit 3) Developing Musical Understanding (40% of AS)
You will also take additional exams at the end of Year 13.

Is there any coursework or controlled assessments?
Unit 1: Performing Music - Students perform a 5-6 minute recital on an instrument (or voice) of their choice. (30% of AS) taken in June. Recorded and internally assessed and externally moderated.
Unit 2: Composing Music - 15 Hours controlled assessment. Students create a 3 minute composition in response to 1 brief from a choice of 4 (30% of AS), externally assessed.
