AS/A2 English Language

Entry Requirements
You should have a range of GCSEs A-C at GCSE with A or B in English. In exceptional circumstances, other grades may be considered.

Course Content
In general, you need to enjoy analysing, discussing and writing original pieces, as well as being interested in the way spoken and written language works, and social attitudes to language. There are no set texts, and linguistic and sociological approaches mean this is a way of exploring language that is very different from GCSE. As such, it is a rigorous and exciting A-Level, but not a soft option! It works well with Psychology, Sociology, English Literature and Modern Languages, but also complements Sciences and Mathematics. The following modules are studied:

AS LEVEL
Module 1 - Categorising Texts (Linguistics)

  • Grouping spoken and written texts.
  • stylistic analysis of texts concerned with Language and Gender, Power and Technology
    Module 2 - Creating Texts (Coursework)
  • Two pieces for different purposes and audiences, plus commentaries

    A2 LEVEL
    Module 3 - Developing Language

  • Child Language Acquisition
  • Historical Change
    Module 4 - Investigating Language (Coursework)
  • Investigative Study applying Linguistics
  • Media Text rewriting theory for a non-specialist audience

    Assessment (AQA)
    AS LEVEL
    Unit 1 - written paper exam

  • 60% AS
  • 30% A2
    Unit 2 - coursework
  • 40% AS
  • 20% A level

    A2 LEVEL
    Unit 3 - written paper exam
  • 30% A level
    Unit 4 - coursework
  • 20% A level
