Aims & objectives

Finham Park Physical Education department aims to give every student a stimulating, enjoyable and broad programme, with opportunities for all pupils to develop physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively at their own level. The new 2008 Physical Education curriculum offers a comprehensive range of experiences to meet the needs of individual pupils and encourage active involvement by all.

The Physical Education programme is centered on a four tier pyramid structure. At the top of the pyramid are the schools flagship sports. The second tier is extra-curricular activities, which gives all students an exciting opportunity to participate in a variety of activities outside of lesson time. The third tier gives students further chances to be involved in the schools sports inter-college competition, culminating in sports day. Finally, the base of the pyramid lies on a solid Physical Education curriculum.

The Physical Education curriculum is designed around a structured programme and developing schemes of work. These schemes of work cater for progression and challenge, generating a sense of achievement and a desire for every child to reach their true potential. Each scheme of work integrates the new curriculum guidelines. All students in key stage 3 should know what level they are achieving and how they are to achieve further by using the departments new assessment policy.

In key stage three the emphasis is on developing a range of basic motor skills across a variety of activities. In key stage four there is a greater emphasis on enjoyment of physical activities giving students the opportunity to participate in sporting activities off site. In key stage four students have the opportunity to further learn sport through GCSE PE & BTEC First Diploma.

The aims of the department are:

  • To encourage enjoyment and satisfaction through a range physical activity;
  • To reach a standard which reflects each student's ability;
  • To motivate each student to take regular exercise;
  • To foster a lifelong interest in physical activity;
  • To offer a variety of different sporting opportunities outside the curriculum, flagship sports, inter-house programme, extra-curricular and other enrichment activities;
  • To continually assess the ability of all students, and for every student to know what level they are achieving and how they can achieve further;
  • Further develop learning in key stage 4 & 5 through applied academic courses.
