The Drama department aims to empower pupils with the social and technical skills utilised regularly in creative lessons.
Also we aim to give pupils a deeper understanding of the world they inhabit, of themselves as citizens and their value system through the exploration and empathising of others.
In doing this pupils will;
Develop a sense of themselves within a safe forum
Gain an appreciation of interpersonal skills and of people.
Explore and extend their technical understanding of Drama and performance
Using problem solving and communication skills to meet the demands of a creative subject
Ethos
We in the Drama Department are an energetic, focused and supportive team working collaboratively to ensure our pupils will get the most from Drama at Finham.
We believe that Drama should be accessible to everyone and we have a real commitment to inclusion and 'Active Learning'. Increasingly, we are entering the 'Age of Presentation' and there is more and more emphasis being placed on communication skills and on how one presents themselves. Through drama lessons, pupils are taught to use their voice, gestures and body language to convey meaning to an audience while developing their knowledge of the world and the people in it. Exploring challenging issues, such as Homelessness, Mental illness and Conflict pupils learn to empathise with others by stepping into their shoes and questioning their preconceptions.
Year 7 are introduced to drama on a 10 week rotation, and then taught in mixed ability groups for 1 lesson a week in year 8 and 9. Pupils can then select to take GCSE, Betec, A level or IB Drama in option classes at Key Stage 4 and 5. We endeavour to challenge and support all learning needs, through differentiation and encouragement, allowing all students to feel included. Gifted and Talented students are challenged during the process of developing their work and many opportunities are offered to further stretch and strengthen their performance skills regularly with events including the West End Residential Trip, Theatre Visits, PAS Workshops, Play-in-a-day, Physical Theatre Workshops, The School Production, The Festive Concert, Showstoppers and many more.
